Mechanical Design of an Option Configurable Counter

Adoption of the new HP System II instrument enclosure, with its structural front casting to support front panels, was the first step down the road to a modular universal counter with multiple frontpanel configurations. The next step was to design optional hardware printed circuit cards to plug directly into a common data bus on the motherboard, thus allowing any desired option mix. The space remaining on the motherboard was dedicated to the counter circuits common to any set of options. Placing these circuits on the motherboard made space available to plug the HP-IB option into the motherboard and out the rear panel. Mass Storage Unit Exerciser

To test the mass storage unit, the 4145A is put in the EXERCISER mode. Because the EXERCISER mode uses the mass storage unit interface circuit and its cables and connectors, these must be checked before the EXERCISER mode is enabled. Memory Processor Module

Three types of finstrates (see Fig, 5 on page 6) are used in the HP 9000 Computer Fig, 3), The CPU finstrate houses the CPU chip and a clock buffer chip. TAPR has available an 8530 SCC (serial-communications controller) daughterboard for the Xerox 820-1.31 It is called the frame assembler disassembler, or FAD board. This board replaces the spare PIO on the 820. The FAD board is not for everyone. It requires some modification of the 820 board and is handy for those who write code for the SCC for other devices (such as the PAD and IBM HDLC boards). TAPR has made the daughterboard available to aid in network development. Some operators will want to use the FAD, while others may wish to use the NRZI circuit K8MMO described in Part 3.

Any supply is available to any plug-in via connectors on a motherboard. There are two 10-volt unregulated supplies, two 25-volt fixed, regulated supplies and two 20-to-70 volt variable regulated supplies. To minimize use of power, the variable supplies were designed with switching regulators, Fig. 2. This circuit is easily programmed to supply large currents at variable voltages.

Tapr Metcon Betatest Kits Available

METCON-1, a simple telemetry and control system for packet radio, is available for beta testing. Twenty beta-test kits, available from TAPR, include the main METCON-1 system board and one voltage-to-frequency board. The system operates by connecting the main METCON-1 board to the EIA-232-D port of a TNC. The remote TNC and METCON-1 are accessed by connecting to the TNC. METCON-1 acts like a remote computer connected to the TNC. METCON-1 uses an 8751 microcomputer to allow a connected user to read and write on off levels at the microcomputer's I O port using a line-oriented command set. Outputs are dry relay contacts to allow you to connect anything you want (within reason a good upper limit is 24 V ac dc at 0.5 A). A maximum of six outputs is possible.

Rear Input

Especially in systems applications it's desirable to have the input on the rear of the instrument. In most voltmeters this is accommodated by some special adaptation, which usually involves some cabling from the front to the rear of the instrument and some sacrifice in performance at higher frequencies. Where a high-impedance 100-MHz input is involved, such an approach is simply out of the question. The 3403 solution to this problem is unique. The ac converter assembly is symmetrical about the connector (on the back of the casting) which is its tie to the instrument's motherboard moreover it is symmetrically located with respect to the front and rear panels. To obtain a rear input to the instrument, the AC Converter Assembly is simply unplugged from the motherboard, turned end-for-end, and replaced into the instrument. The input characteristics and the frequency response are unaffected by the change.

Cool Operation

Cooling an instrument to assure long-term reliability always presents a problem if the instrument is to be compact and the use of a large, noisy fan is to be avoided. Quiet, cool operation was achieved for the & 586A B C by using the space between the motherboard and the gasketed bottom cover as a plenum chamber pressurized by the fan. The pressurized air is allowed to flow through holes in the motherboard, up past ihe circuit modules, through holes in the top of the card nesl. and out ihe sides oJ the instrument. The sizes of the bleed holes were chosen according to the heat dissipated by the adjacent circuits so the higher-power circuits gel more air. In ihis way, circuits do not get air that has already been warmed by circuits elsewhere in the instrument, and I lie airflow for each circuit is appropriate for the amount of heat dissipated. Product Design

Essentially the entire instrument is assembled onto the main circuit board or 'motherboard'. Interlocking aluminum extrusion 'pockets' are mounted directly to the board. The major board assemblies plug into these pockets and become individually sealed modules. The front panel switch board assembly and counter box also plug directly into the motherboard as shown at left, below. The only hand wiring in the instrument is for the potentiometers on the front panel and the primary and secondary transformer windings. Effective RFI shielding has been achieved without reliance on expensive castings. Each major board assembly plugs into its own compartment on the motherboard. Each compartment is enclosed on its four sides by two closely-machined aluminum extrusions, on the top with a tight-fitting cast aluminum cover, and on the bottom by the ground plane on the motherboard. Often the physical constraints placed on the mechanical design of a plug-in result in severe compromises to ease of assembly, test, and service. The 86632A, however, aims to be an example of lack of compromise on such features. Hand wiring has been minimized through the use of a structural motherboard, a harness board, and a 16-wire ribbon cable with IC-type flat-pack connectors.

Model Processor

The Model 825 processor consists of two boards. The main processor board contains the core CPU function, including a 1 fiK-byte cache, a 2K-entry translation lookaside buffer (TLB), clock circuitry, and several bus interface circuits. The second board contains most of the floating-point math subsystem, the I O channel, and the processor dependent hardware. These two boards plug into adjacent motherboard slots and communicate via the math bus and the MidBus. System Board The Model 825 has a floating-point math coprocessor. Its interface to the main processor is the math interface unit M1U chip, which connects to the cache bus and controls the three floating-point math chips. Ideally, the floating-point math chips should be on the same board as the MIU. However, board space constraints would not allow this, Instead, the floating-point math chips are located on the idjacent system board, and the math bus is run to them through the motherboard. Up to 100 dB of gain is necessary to amplify the Johnson noise of the noise source to the level necessary to produce + 12 dBm at the generator output. Careful positioning of RF screening was essential to prevent crosstalk between the bandstop filter path on the 372fiA motherboard (carrying high-level signals) and the early stages of the noise source contained within the same mainframe.

The higher-frequency bandstop filters use quartz crystals. and all the other filters use passive LC (inductance-capacitance) elements. The band-defining filters use series combinations of high-pass and low-pass sections. Many of the inductors use stranded Litz** wire to achieve the high 0 necessary. The filters are hermetically sealed to prevent the Litz wire's absorbing moisture, since this would reduce their Q. The hermetic seal is effected by printing a broad rectangular copper border on the component side of the printed circuit board and soldering a steel cover to it, A small quantity of silica gel is enclosed to absorb any moisture trapped at the time of sealing. This avoids any necessity to fill the enclosure with specially dried gas. The filter printed circuit board is mounted within its case, an edge connector at one end interfaces to the motherboard in the 3726A, and a plastic molding and keyswitch at the other end becomes the front panel. There is nothing critical about the construction other than using good digital design practice and following the grounding and decoupling recommendations given in the ADC0820 data sheet. The design was actually constructed using an 80C51 system board obtained on the surplus market. The board already contained the microcontroller, crystal, EPROM socket, address latch, and RAM connected in the standard 80C51 configuration as given in the 80C51 manufacturers data sheet.
