The HP 2640A CRT terminal is now being integrated into Hewlett-Packard's internal data entry and data communications system called COMSYS. A worldwide distributed network of minicomputer systems, COMSYS uses dial-up telephone lines to link 76 HP locations for the transfer of data. Currently over 150 CRT terminals of various types are being used to enter approximately three million characters of data per day. Total COMSYS traffic averages 40 million characters of data per day with peaks of over 100 million characters per day. The 2640A is being used as an operator-to-program interface with its primary COMSYS use being for data entry. Sales orders, shipping papers, payroll information, statistics and general messages are only a few of the kinds of data being entered into COMSYS via 2640A terminals. Application programs access IMAGE data bases through a set of IMAGE system services. These services give the programmer high-level, applications-oriented data base access, without concern for where the data is stored or how it is accessed. Services are available to open and close a data base for access, obtain information about the data base, read all or some of the data items in a specific data entry, add a new data entry to the data set, update data item values in an existing data entry, delete a data entry from the data set, and lock and unlock the data base or a subset of it for temporary exclusive access. Using these services, programs can access the data base in one of four modes. Serial access retrieves successive data entries from the data set. It is often used to process an entire data set in one pass. Direct access retrieves data entries based upon their record locations within the data base. The final correction applied to the PCO computation compensates for the errors caused by interfering gases (see box on page 16). Data entry is another application that has typically been the province of terminals requiring computer support. In general, a form is provided for the user at the terminal from the computer. The user then enters the data into the computer and it is subsequently printed on preprinted forms by the computer's line printer. HPEASYCHART does not use a file for data entry. Instead, the user selects a chart type and then enters individual data values to construct the desired output. This data entry method makes HPEASYCHART well suited for one-time applications, such as charts needed as illustrations in a text document or as presentation aids. Periodic charts with unchanging design specifications are more efficiently prepared using data files and a chartmaker like DSG 3000. Instead of presenting a confusing array of options, HPEASYCHART menus are uncluttered. A help menu is available with examples. Operating instructions are minimized by including sample data with each menu option. These samples not only instruct the user on correct data entry, but also serve as default values that allow the user to preview the output. The man-machine interface is keyboard-and-menu-display, similar to Model 1610A Logic State Analyzer described in the preceding article. The CRT display is a raster-scan type for both the timing diagram and alphanumerics. Menus are called up by the keyboard and changes are made by moving a cursor to the desired location and pressing the appropriate data entry keys. The input lines can be labelled on the display to make it easier to format and evaluate data listings (Fig. 3).
In addition to all of its graphics features, the HP 2700 is a complete alphanumeric terminal compatible with the HP 2622A Data Entry Terminal. Applications that depend on block mode and format mode, such as VPLUS 3000, will run unchanged on the IIP 2700. The data base inquiry (DBI) facility is used to access an IMAGE data base without an application program. It is particularly useful during application debugging to generate test data in the data base or examine data base contents. Data base inquiry is also useful for handling impromptu inquires into the data base, to display and summarize the data stored there. Using it, the user can display information about the data base structure, add data entries to a data set, delete data entries from a data set, modify data item values in a data entry, display the values of data items in selected data entries, and print data base inquiry responses on the printer. ADD EMPLOYEE DBI requests a value for each data item in the data entry, by name, on the screen. The data supplied in response is checked for validity before being stored in the data base.
One motivation for conservative translation was to maximize the perceived responsiveness of the system. In a highly interactive system wilh the range of processing speed available in a handheld environment, data entry and translation can occupy a large fraction of the overall processing time. Like other HP 3000 Systems, the Series 33 runs under the Multiprogramming Executive (MPE III) operating system, including the recent additions of a new, friendlier user interface and private disc volumes. A new, easy-to-use data entry subsystem, VIEW 3000, is supported on both the HP 3000 Series 33 and the HP 3000 Series II III. The HP 3000 33 supports all CRT terminals in Hewlett-Packard's 2620 and 2640 families, including the HP 2647A and HP 2648A Graphics Terminals with automatic plotting of columnar data. Also supported is the HP 2635A printing terminal. Each terminal operator independently has full access to all system resources. Data entry, data base updates and retrievals, interactive program development, data communications, and batch programs can all be supported simultaneously on the system. Data Entry Fig. 5. A data communications port can be attached to any one of the workspaces at a given time. Data flow is to and from that workspace only other workspaces are unaffected. The data entry example in Fig. 3 illustrates how this feature is used. A data entry application program in the host computer first creates four workspaces in the 2626A terminal and attaches its host's data communications port to each workspace in turn to transmit a form to it. A new, small, rugged, alphanumeric LED display, the Hewlett-Packard type IFDSP-2000, now reduces the cost of using alphanumeric by minimizing needed supporting circuitry. Coupled with the recent availability of low-cost microprocessors and semiconductor memories, this should contribute to a rapid expansion in the use of displays with full alphanumeric capability (upper and lower case alphabet. numerals, and special symbols) where previously they have not been practical. Some of the potential applications for low-cost alphanumeric display systems are in calculators, portable computer terminals. data-entry stations, and other readout devices, all of which are becoming more common in business, medical, and telecommunications systems.
In achieving the first objective, concessions were made by reducing data entry sizes, data set capacities, and other specifications. The number of ways to open and access a data base was also reduced. Three of the eight DBOPEN modes were implemented this is sufficient to allow exclusive or shared data base access. BAR CODES ARE A RAPIDLY CROWING method of manual data entry that can be used as an effective alternative to keyboards. A Liar code is a self-contained message with information encoded in the physical widths of bars and spaces in a printed pattern. Hewlett-Packard's new HEDS-3000 Digital Bar Code Wand Fig. 11 is a reliable interface between these printed bar codes and a digilal decoding system. When the handheld wand is used to scan the bar code, it converts the light reflected from the printed bars and spaces into TTL or CMOS-compatible logic levels. The resulting digital signal is available for input in a d gital decoding system.
To make data entry easy and the output format clear and comprehensive, segmented windows on the screen prompt the user for input values and the soft keys are activated to browse back through Ihe data and edit it if needed. Results of the calculation can be inspected on the screen or can be printed in the form shown in Fig. 2. The new terminal (Fig. lj has dual data communications ports for connection to computers or peripherals and the user can divide both the display memory and the display screen into as many as four independent work areas. Other features are line widths up to 160 characters with horizontal scrolling, screen-labeled softkeys, an optional built-in thermal forms-copy printer, programmable tones for audio cues, and keys for interactive Forms design.
Two special entries are available for Model 5401A these can be selected by means of a switch on the interface control board. First, the very first data entry can be the starting channel number of the multichannel analyzer data. And second, after the final data entry, a SET FLAG-CONTINUE command can be entered by the interface. This can be used to cause a conditional branch in the calculator program.

User sophistication varies considerably, from the data entry clerk to the very knowledgeable OEM customer. Each user needs to take advantage of a different set of features. A department manager of a data entry operation, f or example, needs to configure the terminal for use by dala entry clerks. The terminal provides configuration menus for this purpose. On the other hand, these configuration menus can be locked out and made unavailable to the clerks to avoid confusing them with details they don't need. To allow a user to draw simple bar charts without graphics capability, one of the terminal's character sets has been oxpanded to include appropriate characters. The forms-drawing keys make it easy to design data entry forms.
The syntax for operating the instrument from the keyboard makes operation straightforward. Some examples of user convenience are short-form entry of addresses and data (omitting leading zeros), multiple consecutive data entry (holding down the ENTER key causes the same data to be loaded into successive memory locations), automatic incrementing of the address register when a data entry is made, and the single-step FWD and BACK keys.
Before conversion to analog form, the binary-coded-decimal numbers are first converted to binary in a BCD-to-binary converter. This converter drives the switches in a conventional 10-bit binary resistor ladder network which does the final conversion to a bipolar analog voltage. The final converter is a thin-film hybrid circuit containing the switches and thin-film resistor ladder network in one package. Manual Data Entry
Placing the AUTOPLOT disc in drive 1 and pressing the CHART TYPE key starts up the application and brings up a chart type display (Fig. 1). This serves as a home base from which all the major parts of the system can be accessed. The parts are data entry, chart format specification, text slide and labels, saving and recalling charts, combining charts, hard copy, and multiple hard copy. Pictures of the major chart types are used for selection of the type of chart to be created. The keyboard's thumbwheels are used to place the cursor on the picture of the chart type desired. Arithmetic operations and temporary storage of data and instructions are accomplished in the nine internal registers indicated in Fig. 4. Eight of these are flip-flop (integrated circuit) registers. The ninth is a row of toggle switches for manual data entry. The contents of all but one of the flip-flop registers are available to the programmer, and are displayed on the front panel.
Because the primary business applications are data intensive in contrast to the computational intensity of scientific applications, the HP 250's data base management software system is considered a significant contribution in a low-cost, entry-level system. Data base access is further enhanced through better data entry and reporting capabilities. These facilities, coupled with a powerful inquiry facility, provide easy access to timely information for better control of the business.
When 1 laid out my data transmitter, I used three 8-switch dip switches making for a maximum of 24 binary data entry possibilities. However, the digital tuner can use only 19 of the 24 switches. In an attempt to keep things positioned correctly for minimum data entry into the data transmitter, the binary printout is formatted with the four band hits shown on the left followed by the 15 main frequency divider bits. Spacing is provided between the switch groupings to aid user readability by matching the three blocks of switches. Because of the two-digit offset between the data transmitter switches and the tuner's register, adjusting the placement of the data bit pattern on the transmitter switches is required.
Applications for the HP 250 in larger companies tend to be departmental in scope and span a broad range of functional tasks. The HP 250 supports this type of need with powerful application tools in the IMAGE 250 data base manager, FORMS 250 data entry facility, REPORT WRITER 250 report production facility and QUERY 250 inquiry capability. These tools simplify the development of specific applications for departments of larger companies.
On the main alphanumeric keyboard, the arrangement of characters resembles that found on a typewriter. The philosophy here was that more people are familiar with a typewriter than with other alphanumeric keyboards, such as the teletypewriter. Keys have been added to this general arrangement to implement the full ASCII character set. Close cooperation among many HP divisions has resulted in this basic arrangement becoming a standard for a number of diverse data entry products.
As mentioned above, the toolkit consists of three segments a converter, a compactor, and I O routines. VPRC, The vector-and-polygon-to-raster converter first converts vectors and polygons to a compacted form that has all of the transformations applied to it, that is, all scaling. clipping, rotating, and so on. It then rasterizes the compacted objects. The compacted data form has a fixed byte format, which means it is very easy to find the next object in the list. Unlike most vector-to-raster converters, this converter directly rasterizes polygons. This not only improves the process, but also makes it possible to fill polygons with raster fill patterns (binary patterns made by turning bits on and off).
RPG-II 300 features an interactive multiterminal data entry extension that significantly expands the terminal accessing capability of RPG. Using this extension, an executing RPG program can accept data entered from one or more HP 300 application terminals or from the IDS. The system automatically enacts this facility by starting a dialogue with the user at the IDS before the program executes.
