On most every communications receiver worthy of the name, you'll find a small knob labelled "AVC-MVC" or something of the sort. On the newer ones, the label is more likely to read "AVC: Fast-Slow-Off."

Experienced operators use tliis control more or less by instinct. The newer hams more often tend tu leave it set in one position permanently and ignore it. But chances are very few of us, experienced or not, really understand what's behind that knob—and why.
